UPI payments require an active internet connection; however, there are some locations where the internet connection is extremely slow. It is virtually impossible to conduct transactions using UPI or any of the UPI apps that support it in such cases. NPCI launched *99#, a USSD-based mobile banking service, in November 2012.

This *99# service was made available to all mobile phone users in India, including those who did not own a smartphone. You can use the *99# service and use all UPI facilities as long as you are a part of the UPI ecosystem and the phone you are using for this has the registered phone number linked to your UPI account.
