Apple has launched its new flagship iPhone 15 series. With every new iPhone launch, users often wonder whether they should upgrade to the newer model and if it is better than its predecessors. So, we did our research and testing and created this iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 comparison guide. Here is how the new iPhone 15 Pro is different and similar to the previous iPhone 14 Pro. Let’s get on with it.
Design, Build, and Colors
Let’s start with the design and the build of these two iPhones. The first impression and one of the major changes you will see in the new iPhone 15 Pro is the build material. While the iPhone 14 Pro has a shiny stainless steel frame, its successor, the iPhone 15 Pro, comes with a brushed Grade 5 Titanium body.
The advantage of having the new Titanium body is the weight reduction and the added durability. The iPhone 14 Pro weighs 206g while the iPhone 15 Pro weighs just 187g, a significant reduction. You can feel the weight right away as soon as you pick it up in your hands.
Also, the iPhone 15 Pro has rounder edges on the top and bottom, making it more comfortable to hold and use for long periods of time. Another design change is the colors that were introduced with the new titanium body.
With iPhone 15 Pro, you will get Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium, and Natural Titanium. While for iPhone 14 Pro, you get Space Black, Gold, Silver, and Deep Purple.
However, it is worth noting that there have been many reported incidences of discoloration in the iPhone 15 Pro models. Apple admitted the issue in its support document. It can happen due to skin oil and dust. They had a simple solution too. Just wipe it off using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. We recommend getting the natural titanium body color to avoid or minimize the effect.
Displays and Dynamic Island
Everything on iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro is the same when it comes to the display and resolution. Both iPhones feature a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display. Along with this, you have the 2556-by-1179-pixel resolution, which is again impressive and can be seen the same on both iPhones.
However, one noticeable difference you might see between the two Pro models is the bezels. iPhone 15 Pro has thinner bezels.
Apple introduced the Dynamic Island feature with the iPhone 14 Pro series. It replaced the notch on the top with a set of new features, elements, and notifications for background apps. A true fusion of hardware and on-screen software. It covers up the infamous notch that many users didn’t really like. Now it is more functional and useful. So what’s changed?
The Dynamic Island supports more apps than before like voice memos.
Other than the above set of features, you will also find up to 1000 nits of brightness for general use while up to 2000 nits of brightness when you are outdoors. So brightness levels remain the same as the previous year.
Camera Unit
The iPhone Pro models are known for their camera units. On paper, you will notice there are no camera hardware changes for both iPhones.
Both iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro have the same:
- Main: 48MP, ƒ/1.78 aperture
- Ultra Wide: 12MP, ƒ/2.2 aperture
- Telephoto: 12MP, ƒ/2.8 aperture
However, there are some significant changes in software that will change how your photos come out looking. Firstly, the default camera resolution is now 24MP on the iPhone 15 Pro as opposed to 12MP on the iPhone 14 Pro. This should give you a bit more dynamic range while shooting photos and sharper images.
Even though the default resolution is now 24 MP, the file size only increases by about 50%, which is impressive. Furthermore, the iPhone 15 Pro now has three different focal length options for the main camera. You have the default 24mm, then 28mm, and 35mm. It is perfect for photographers who are more focused on focal length options while shooting for better images.
Similar to the iPhone 14 Pro, you get 3x telephoto optical zoom, the same you will find in the iPhone 15 Pro. Instead of zooming in on the image, you can directly click on the .5x, 1x, 2x, and 3x optical zoom options and focus on the subject.
Moving on, the iPhone 15 Pro comes with a next-gen Portrait mode. Now, instead of choosing the portrait mode to click a more focused image of the subject, the system auto-reads the subject in front of you, such as a person, dog, or cat, or even when you choose the subject in front of you, and captures a depth map.
This means you can turn a regular image into a portrait by adjusting the focal point or the bokeh level even after the image was captured. While clicking a regular photo, if you see the f icon pop-up, you can capture the portrait info. Overall, you do not have to worry about whether you should take a portrait photo or a regular photo.
The same feature also works on your front camera, where your regular selfie image can now be converted to a next-gen portrait image. On the video recording front, almost all the features remain the same on both iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 such as 4K video recording, Cinematic mode, Time-lapse video, etc.
One major change you might see in the iPhone 15 Pro is the ProRes video recording which jumped from 4K30 to 4K60. This will drastically increase the video file size, for which you can directly connect an external hard drive and record the videos on it.
With Apple Vision Pro coming later this year, you can now shoot 3D spatial photos and videos and view them on the Vision Pro. The Vision Pro was unveiled earlier this year and will hit the market sometime early next year.
Chip and Performance
While the iPhone 14 Pro uses the A16 bionic chip, the new iPhone 15 Pro comes with a new A17 Pro chip. There is a lot to unpack here when it comes to the performance of both these chips.
Now we know that the A16 bionic chip, which features a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, is one of the most powerful among all the iPhones ever made.
However, the A17 pro chip features the first-ever 3-nanometer chip, which brings in the biggest GPU ever and is 20% faster than the A16. Similarly, the CPU is about 10% faster than the predecessor. While the iPhone 14 Pro packs the 5-core GPU, the new 6-core GPU in the iPhone 15 Pro brings in hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
What does all of this mean for you?
You can now play AAA games on your new iPhone 15 Pro. Yup. This is now made true thanks to the 6-core GPU. Games like Assassins Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4 will soon be available to play on your iPhone 15 Pro. And no, we are not talking about the mobile version of these games, but the full version that you play on gaming consoles. Crazy, right?
You can connect your controller using the new USB-C port and play Assassins Creed Mirage directly on your iPhone and enjoy the console-like graphics.
Finally, USB-C Is Here
One of the common features you will find in both iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro is the 5G connectivity with both mmWave and sub-6GHz networks.
The mmWave is the fastest 5G network among all; however, they are short-range ranged can be obstructed by trees, buildings, and other obstacles. Hence, this is used majorly in urban areas for airports, stadiums, etc.
Adding more to this, you also get Bluetooth 5.3 connection and Gigabit LTE with 4×4 MIMO to help you connect with LTE networks. Apart from these, the iPhone 14 Pro brings in the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature. This feature works in locations where you have no wifi or cellular connection. Hence, if you are in an accident and require immediate assistance, you can send a message via satellite.
This feature is also available in iPhone 15 Pro. However, with iOS 17, you can now also make use of Roadside Assistance via Satellite. This feature allows you to call for assistance if your car breaks down, such as a flat tire, running out of fuel, locked out, or anything else. You can call for AAA and request roadside assistance.
The above feature is available on iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15, or iPhone 15 Pro. However, make sure you have upgraded to iOS 17 to be able to use this service on your smartphone.
Now, moving over to one of the biggest changes brought in with the iPhone 15 Pro is the USB-C port. Yes, too little and too late but it is here now. You can now use USB-C charging cables to charge your iPhones, starting from the iPhone 15 series. While the iPhone 14 Pro continues to rock the lightning cable.
USB-C on iPhone 15 Pro uses the USB 3 port that gives up to 10Gbps transfer speed much better than the lighting port. Also, you can use your iPhone 15 Pro to charge another iPhone, AirPods, and your Apple Watch using the USB-C cable.
Interestingly, the iPhone 15 Pro supports USB-C 3.0 while the cable in the box is only 2.0. You will need to buy new cables and of course, a new adaptor.
It is also worth noting that while Apple decided to upgrade the AirPods Pro Gen 2 from lighting cable to USB-C, iPhone 14 Pro models didn’t receive the same treatment. That would have been generous and awesome on Apple’s part.
Battery and Other Features
Nothing much has changed in the new iPhone 15 Pro compared to the iPhone 14 Pro in the battery department. Both have a battery backup of around 23 hours for video playback. This means you can easily enjoy streaming and watching videos all day long on a single charge.
Now, this may vary if you are playing games, especially the AAA titles on your iPhone 15 Pro. While recording ProRes videos as well, the battery might fall drastically on both devices. However, it still works pretty amazing overall.
While everyone is excited about the USB-C, they forgot about an incredible feature brought in with the iPhone 15 series. You might have heard about the Ultra Wideband chip, or U1, introduced back in 2019 with the iPhone 11. The same is available in iPhone 14 Pro, which helps you locate your friends or lost items through the Find My app.
Now, the new iPhone 15 series comes with the Second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, making it much easier to find your friends or family in a crowd. This feature is called Precision Finding. You can go to the Find My app and try locating your friend’s iPhone. Your screen will then show you the distance with an arrow pointing in the right direction so you can follow and locate your friends.
Mute and Action Button
iPhone 14 Pro features the iconic mute button on the left side that you use to silence your phone. Well, all the iPhones before that have it too. A handy and quick way to silence your smartphone and put it back to Ringer when needed.
Now, with the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, this has been upgraded to an Action Button. You can customize the Action Button and set it to any shortcut you wish, such as Silent mode, Focus, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Magnifier, Siri Shortcut, Accessibility, or simply choose No Action.
All you have to have to do is select an action to perform and click on it to make it happen. This is an incredible addition to the new iPhone 15 that you can look forward to.
Price and Capacity
Now, it all comes down to the Price of the iPhone 15 Pros that will help you decide which is the best for you.
iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 for 128 GB capacity. You can also get the 256GB model for $1,099 and the 512GB model for $1,299.
Similarly, iPhone 15 Pro pricing is the same as above, starting from $999 for 128GB and moving ahead the same as above.
Should You Upgrade From iPhone 14 Pro to iPhone 15 Pro
Overall, some things have changed with the new iPhone 15 Pro but most things still remain the same.
We don’t think there are enough changes to urge you to upgrade from 14 Pro to 15 Pro. However, if you are looking to buy your first iPhone or upgrade from an older model like the iPhone 12 or 13 series, then you should go for the iPhone 15 Pro. You will love the new Action Button, dynamic island (iPhone 13 and older series), new colors, lightweight body, and better camera features.
Furthermore, if you are a gamer, then you would definitely enjoy the AAA games on a small screen. We loved the new iPhone 15 series, but for now, we will wait another year to upgrade from the iPhone 14 Pro.
